Spurt in Vocabulary
Toddlers add words to their vocabulary at about one to two words per week. But their most exponential rate of growth is between 18 to 24 months; it is during this time frame that they are learning one to two words per day. From then on out children show a steady increase of word learning until they begin preschool.
Children are able to learn words so quickly and efficiently because of how much exploring they do in their early years. They are also more apt to use social cues to learn new words such as pointing, eye gaze, and handling objects for themselves.

Two-Word Utterance
Two-word utterances are known as telegraphic speech. It is called this because like telegrams were used they focus on high-content words. They tend to eliminate any shorter and less important words.
Simple Formula
During an infants phase of two word speech they use simple formulas to speak. For example, more + X and eat + X and then new words replace the X in the formula. They tend to use words that they already know and pair them with a new word. They learn this type of speech from adults. They just eliminate all of the extra words that they do not know because they have yet to get a grasp on the subject-verb part of speech.
